The main reason people decide to go organic when gardening is that they think commercial chemicals, including pesticides and fertilizers, may degrade soil quality, harm the environment and cause long-term damage to their personal health. Another benefit is that organic gardening techniques are often cost little-to-nothing. To begin your journey into the world of organic gardening, follow these tips.

Bring your young ones into the garden with you so they will learn about organic methods. Growing a garden is a great way to teach your children about nature while allowing you to have time to bond with them.

For your flower beds, organic material should be used as mulch. Two or three inches should be enough. Mulch will minimize weed growth and maximize nutrients and moisture. It also adds a uniform and cohesive look to the garden.

Make the most of the time spent in your garden. Don’t waste your time looking for missing tools. Before you make a trip to your garden, you should gather all tools and items in advance. Afterwards, be sure to return them to their original storage place. Invest in a tool belt or wear pants that have lots of pockets.

Pine can make for a great type of mulch. A number of plants commonly grown in garden settings do best in an acidic soil. If that’s the case, the easiest thing to do is use pine needles for beds. Covering your plant beds with a layer of pine needles will allow the pine needles to disperse their acidic nutrients into the soil for your plants.

Try using coffee grounds on the soil. Coffee beans are loaded with nitrogen, which offers nourishment for plants. Your plants will really bloom if they get the nitrogen they need from coffee grounds or compost or diluted urea.

Use an aged laundry basket when you want to collect your produce. The basket will make a great strainer when you wash your vegetables. Doing this allows you to both rinse and drain your fresh produce.

A good general rule when planting your seeds into containers is that the depth of the planting should be about three times the size of the seed. However, you should be aware that certain seeds should not be covered at all because they are required to be in the sunlight. Petunia and ageratum seeds need direct sunlight, for example. If you are unsure if your seeds should be covered, refer to the seed packet, or if that is not available, look for information online.

If you want to sell your crops, you should become a certified organic gardener. Obtaining this certification will give you further credibility as an organic gardener, boosting sales and proving to your customers that you provide only the best.

By following some of the tips we include in this article, you’ll be up and running in no time and will soon have a good supply of produce grown in your own garden. You should notice more wildlife present in your garden if you use natural methods.
